Poetry of Kansas

Alice Yesterday

There came a blurred intensity,
Poor light to see things by.
They got mixed up___when yesterday
      You came by.
You and the woods, skies full of bright air,
      A timber-bird's cry.
We waded streams. Earth flat to our backs
      On rugs beneath the sky,
A five-minute sudden nap we had
      You and I.
A chicken-dinner at Sagmount Inn
From nine in the morning till ten at night
      I heard all beauty cry.
Devil take all muddled affairs!
There were God and you and I.
