Poetry of Kansas

A December Twilight

Swirling, loitering snow!
Silent, mysterious storm!
Who of all wise men know
Why thy six sides ever form!
What force in thy upper-air birth
In beauty encrystals some cloud
Floating in April o'er earth,
Now weaning green April's shroud!
Beating in summer the plain,
Now ghosting young winter's hour
Resurgent, starred rain,
Art thou the wraith of a shower?
Instincts thy spiculae form
Not yet do wise men know,
Silent, mysterious storm,
Loitering, great-flaked snow!
