Poetry of Kansas

The Prairie.

I called and called,
But no one heard.
The yellow wheat was silent
Under the scorching sun.
I said, "I give! I give!"
But no one took what I
So generously proffered.
I had much to give.
I cried, "Oh come! Oh come!"
But no one came to me
Baffled, I took my way alone,
Across the prairie's stretch.
