Poetry of Kansas

Below, the cracked, brown earth,
      Like ancient earthen-ware,
Spreads out its dusty, worn
      Old surface, baked and bare.
Above, the polished blue
      Of a burnished August sky
Is an inverted bowl
      Of every drop drained dry.
